From time to time, things go wrong within a business and it becomes necessary to invoke the disciplinary or grievance procedure to manage the situation. On most occasions, it will be possible to manage it in-house, but there will be times when it is necessary to bring in an external person to conduct an impartial investigation, for example in cases of potential gross misconduct when the outcome may be dismissal or where the nature of the incident means that it is difficult within limited resources, to find an appropriate internal person to conduct the investigation.
